Face-lift N°3: Two Bad Forms

Today I’m going to give you two small grudges I hold against bad forms.

Those are not big “show-stoppers” issue, but I feel compelled to expose those usability quarks to help make more people happy. (Starting by me).

After getting a bit overwhelmed with my last facelift: Getting Carried Away, I’m giving you two very short UX update.

What is it you might ask me? Well it’s simple, I’m giving a “face-lift” to some website, web applications or any type of interface I come across while browsing.

It’s simple, a “face-lift” is me trying to make the interface more usable, easier to use and somehow enjoyable (I’ll try prettier but that’s a matter of taste isn’t it?)

I’m using simple usability techniques, a quick mock-up/prototype and some bullet points to highlights the before after.

But there is a trick: I only “face-lift” website that I actually use and I’m only giving me a few hours to get that done.

Let’s get started after the break

Face-lift N°2: Getting Carried Away

Today second post of a new series called “Face-lift”.

What is it you might ask me? Well it’s simple, I’m giving a “face-lift” to some website, web applications or any type of interface I come across while browsing.

But there is a trick: I only “face-lift” website that I actually use and I’m only giving me a few hours to get that done.

My first face-lift is today: http://www.trafikanten.no/ and this time I already broke my own rules.

I’m telling you why (and how) after the jump.

2010: a subtle design upgrade

Welcome to the new and improved stratosferik.com but that’s only a start.

After much reviewing, user feedback gathering, I’ve redesign the site, but only slightly.

I wanted to make the pages clearer, give more prominence to the subject and have a more streamlined/consistent approach between the various sections.

Face-lift N°1: A simple form

Today I’m inaugurating a new series of posts called “Face-lift”.

What is it you might ask me? Well it’s simple, I’m giving a “face-lift” to some website, web applications or any type of interface I come across while browsing.

Frenchbeauty: Case Study

Today I’m going to give a quick run through the FrenchBeauty website creation.

I’ll give you an overview of my methodology, and off course will put the project in context. Then I’ll look into the UX tools I used such as Personas and Wireframe.

I tried to make it clear and concise, with some nice visuals, as sometimes pictures are worth a 1000 words.

Well, if you’re ready, it all happens after the break.

Google (possible) redesign

The good, the Bad and the King

google_logo

Google largest website on the planet (maybe of the universe)  might be on the verge of a quiet redesign. Currently on test, not everything will make it to the final release, but there’s no way I’m not looking into what might be the biggest “unnoticed change” this year.

Google is well known for its common sense approach and clever usability design. (They basically offer a text box on a white background). And beside the unstoppable amount of new applications released daily. The king of search hasn’t really changed anything in its core design.

So what will the new google be made of? Let’s find out.

Smurfitschool.ie

Smurfitschool.ie is aimed mainly at future students, so we developped a full team dynamic to create a user-friendly, engaging and convincing experience. It offers a clear content architecture and navigationas well as integration with online recruitment system.

I was the main web manager and responsible for the day to day maintenance and update of the website as well as planning and implemenation of the projects.

Over 4 years, the website completed 2 majors redesign were functional specification and content requirements changed in scope and timing. I have to thank the great people at IQ Content for their work, help and guidance.

This was a wholesome experience were I developped my thirst for more UX design.

ucd.ie/quinn

Quinnschool.ie is the undergraduate sister school to smurfitschool.ie. The site needed to take a similar yet different approach to its target audience. Emphasise has been put on a more vibrant, youthful visual design. The website has been redesigned alongside smurfitschool.ie and integrated interactive maps, video, student testimonials etc. The challenge was to develop a strong brand identity while keeping the university branding.
I created also newsletters and graphics to support the marketing initiatives. I worked as part of a cross-functional team and responsible for design, development and support.

In 3 years, the website undertook two successive redesigns to make it appealing ang engaging.

The website had a wealth of content crippled by outdated content structure and navigation. Each redesign adopted the main university templates and I focused on getting the information architecture right. Bringing the content to the users. This project emphasized on clarity of information, navigation and it also needed to change the perception of the school.

For the 2nd redesign in 2009, I was part of a project team responsible for development, implementation. I pushed towards uses of UX method to organise content (Personas, Card sorting, wireframes and prototypes).
